Kei Nishikori defeated Denis Istomin in four sets Sunday to give Japan an insurmountable 3-1 lead over Uzbekistan and send his country into the Davis Cup World Group playoffs in mid-September. Nishikori, playing in the Davis Cup for the first time in two years, won 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 in their second-round tie in Asian/Oceania Group 1.
