Nishikori reaches new height in ATP rankings

Rising teenager Kei Nishikori climbed to 66th in the ATP rankings released Monday to become the second-highest Japanese on the top-tier men’s tennis circuit. Nishikori rose 11 places from the previous week to a new career-high after reaching the semifinals of the Stockholm Open, his second best result on the tour following his victory in February at the Delray Beach International in Florida.

German qualifier Philipp Petzschner stunned eighth-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-4 to win the Austrian Open yesterday at Vienna. He’s the first qualifier to win the ATP Tour event since Belgian Filip Dewulf defeated Thomas Muster in 1995. He is also just the third qualifier to win a title this year, following Japan’s Kei Nishikori at Delray Beach and Frenchman Gilles Simon at Casablanca.
