Rising teenager Kei Nishikori climbed to 66th in the ATP rankings released Monday to become the second-highest Japanese on the top-tier men’s tennis circuit. Nishikori rose 11 places from the previous week to a new career-high after reaching the semifinals of the Stockholm Open, his second best result on the tour following his victory in February at the Delray Beach International in Florida.
Shuzo Matsuoka achieved the highest-ever ranking by a Japanese man under the computerized world rankings established in 1973 with 46th place in July 1992. Jun Kuki and Toshiro Sakai were the second and third highest with 74th and 75th, respectively, before the 18-year-old Nishikori moved up to his current ranking.
