Tennis player Kei Nishikori was defeated by 17th-seeded Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in a match of teen stars in the fourth round of the men’s singles at the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament on Monday.

Nishikori, 18, lost 3-6, 4-6, 3-6 to 19-year-old del Potro, missing out on a chance to be the first Japanese tennis player to enter the top eight since Zenzo Shimizu in 1922.

In their game at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Nishikori led the first set 3-0, but then he missed a series of shots, and del Potro took the lead with a run of good play.

In the third round of the women’s doubles, Japan’s Ai Sugiyama, the No. 4 seed, and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia defeated U.S. player Lindsay Davenport and Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-2, 6-3. It is the second year in a row for Sugiyama to proceed to the top eight.

In the men’s singles, top-seeded player Rafael Nadal of Spain made it to the final eight, while the sisters Venus and Serena Williams of the United States both advanced to the quarterfinals.
